A large fire broke out early Friday morning at the vacant Friendship Baptist Church located at East 55th Street and Central Avenue in Cleveland. Flames quickly overtook the long-empty building, drawing an urgent response from emergency services.
By the time nearly 60 firefighters reached the scene, the historic structure was already fully engulfed. The church, built in the 1890s and more than 130 years old, stood little chance against the intense blaze.
The roof eventually collapsed under the heat and weight of the fire. Once the flames were brought under control, the severely damaged structure was deemed unsafe and later demolished.
City officials placed the estimated loss at approximately $500,000. They described the building as “irreplaceable,” highlighting both its age and its place in the community’s history.
Thankfully, no injuries were reported among firefighters or anyone else at the scene. The rapid response helped prevent the fire from spreading to nearby properties.
