On Saturday, former President Donald Trump issued a stark ultimatum to Iran, setting a 48-hour deadline for the regime to lift restrictions on the Strait of Hormuz, a vital passage for global energy shipping. If Iran does not comply, Trump vowed significant military escalation, stating that the United States would target and destroy key Iranian power plants, starting with the largest.
The deadline is a direct response to Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, which has been a crucial route for global oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies. Normally, around 20% of the world’s oil transits through the strait. However, the ongoing conflict has led to a sharp decline in commercial shipping through the area, with traffic dropping by as much as 90%.
