According to reports, elements of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, along with the amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli, were redirected toward the region. Additional forces from the Boxer Amphibious Ready Group are also being deployed, including ships such as the USS Boxer, USS Portland, and USS Comstock.
Marine Expeditionary Units are designed to provide flexible response options, including amphibious operations, evacuation support, and humanitarian assistance. These units typically include infantry, aviation, and logistics components capable of operating independently or as part of larger missions. Officials have indicated that such deployments are intended to enhance readiness and provide a range of operational capabilities.
The move comes amid heightened regional tensions, particularly around key waterways such as the Strait of Hormuz. While leaders including Donald Trump have stated that large-scale ground operations are not currently planned, the additional forces provide military planners with increased flexibility as the situation continues to evolve.
