An individual has been detained for questioning in connection with the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show co-host Savannah Guthrie, according to local and federal authorities. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department confirmed late Tuesday that a person was taken into custody following a traffic stop south of Tucson and is being interviewed as part of the ongoing investigation.
Officials have not released the identity of the detained individual or announced any charges. Authorities also have not confirmed whether the person is the same individual shown in recently released surveillance images from Guthrie’s home. NBC News reported that the individual detained is a male, while The New York Times reported the detention occurred in Rio Rico, Arizona, near the U.S.–Mexico border. Law enforcement sources told multiple outlets that the person has no known relation to the Guthrie family.
The detention follows increased law enforcement activity in the Tucson area, including the deployment of specialized units. Earlier in the day, the FBI released images recovered from a disabled doorbell camera system that appear to show a masked individual approaching Guthrie’s residence. Investigators said the footage was retrieved from residual backend data after initial recording devices were removed or damaged. Authorities continue analyzing the images and have not publicly confirmed additional details about the person depicted.
Search efforts remain active as the case enters its second week. Investigators have canvassed nearby neighborhoods, reviewed security footage, and searched surrounding properties. The FBI is offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to Nancy Guthrie’s return. Officials urge anyone with relevant information to contact law enforcement as the investigation continues.
