WHAT?! – Democrat Rep. Delia Ramirez at a summit in Mexico City this weekend tells the audience while speaking in Spanish: “I’m a proud Guatemalan before I’m an American.”
Should these people be allowed to hold office?
Several left-wing American lawmakers traveled to Mexico City over the weekend to attend a summit aimed at challenging U.S. global dominance, organized by the director of an openly anti-capitalist and anti-American organization.
The second annual Panamerican Congress, which took place from Friday through Sunday, brought together leftist “delegates” from around the Americas, including Democrat lawmakers such as Reps. Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib of Minnesota, according to the event website. The summit was organized by the leader of Progressive International — a radical left-wing group that describes capitalism as a “virus” that must be “eradicated” — in partnership with Morena, Mexico’s ruling left-wing party.
While the event’s website only offered vague themes such as “equality” and “solidarity,” David Adler, general coordinator for Progressive Internationaland one of the summit’s main coordinators, said in a television interview ahead of the summit that the event aimed to “confront” what he described as rising authoritarian and fascist threats across the continent. He emphasized a goal of “inverting” global power dynamics by shifting decision-making authority away from Washington, D.C., and towards developing countries in the “Global South” region.
One of the most striking expressions of anti-American sentiment came from Rep. Delia Ramirez of Illinois, who delivered remarks during the event’s opening ceremony.
“I’m a proud Guatemalan before I’m an American,” declared Ramirez in Spanish, whose parents immigrated from Guatemala. The congresswoman — who represents segments of Chicago and its suburbs — further accused the U.S. of being “addicted to war,” and prioritizing “imperialism, militarization, conquest, control, competition in its attempt at domination.”
Ramirez’s husband is in the U.S. illegally, according to her own website, which highlights her credentials as the “only Congressperson in a mixed-status marriage.” Ramirez’s office did not respond to multiple requests for comment by the Daily Caller News Foundation.
