Yes, the Trump administration has filed a lawsuit against the city of Los Angeles over its sanctuary city policies. The lawsuit, filed on June 30, 2025, alleges that the city’s policies obstruct federal immigration enforcement, violating the Constitution’s supremacy clause.
The lawsuit names Los Angeles, its Mayor Karen Bass, and the city council as defendants. It argues that Los Angeles’ policies make it difficult for federal immigration officials to carry out their duties, potentially hindering their ability to detain and remove undocumented individuals, including those with criminal records. The Trump administration claims these sanctuary policies have led to “lawlessness, rioting, looting, and vandalism” in the city.
Los Angeles’ ordinance prohibits the use of city resources, personnel, and property for immigration enforcement and limits cooperation with federal immigration agents. It also restricts the sharing of data with federal immigration authorities. City officials, including Mayor Bass, defend these policies as necessary for public safety, as they believe it encourages immigrant communities to cooperate with local law enforcement without fear of deportation. A spokesperson for Los Angeles City Attorney Hydee Feldstein Soto asserts that the ordinance fully complies with federal law and constitutional principles.
This lawsuit is part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to challenge sanctuary city policies across the United States. The administration has previously sued other jurisdictions, including New York, Illinois, Colorado, and several cities in New Jersey. The outcome of these legal battles could significantly impact the ongoing debate surrounding federal immigration enforcement and the role of local jurisdictions in these efforts.
It’s important to note that a federal judge recently issued a preliminary order blocking the Trump administration from enforcing an executive order withholding federal funds from sanctuary jurisdictions in a separate lawsuit involving San Francisco and other cities. However, the legal landscape surrounding sanctuary cities is constantly evolving, with ongoing litigation and appeals potentially impacting the ultimate enforceability of these policies.
