The internet is gearing up for justice to be served after Elon Musk vowed to investigate where members of Congress are getting staggering amounts of wealth. In his speech at a Wisconsin rally on March 30, 2025, Mr. Musk can be seen addressing a large crowd and commenting on the disconnect between the salary and portfolio of many who hold seats in Congress. In response, many commenters honed in on former Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi.
As background, Mr. Musk and his team at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) have been looking high and low for egregious examples of federal waste and corruption. Musk, known for his work as the head of Tesla, SpaceX, and other top companies, was carefully selected for this role by President Trump. Mr. Musk began his mission for the Trump administration in January of 2025.
In the video of his speech, Mr. Musk comments bitingly on the discrepancies between members of Congress’ wealth and their salaries. Musk spoke of “a lot of strangely wealthy members of Congress.” He continued, “How’d they get $20 million if they’re earning $200,000 a year? Nobody can explain that. We’re gonna try to figure it out, and certainly stop it from happening.”
Posting about the speech Mr. Musk gave on X, conservative political commentator Nick Sortor praised the DOGE head for his strong stance against corruption and, in addition to quoting him, said that corrupt members of Congress will start feeling the heat. As Sortor put it, “🚨 JUST IN: Elon Musk announces he and DOGE are investigating HOW members of Congress are getting obscenely wealthy on their government salaries Heads are about to ROLL! 🔥”
In response to Sortor’s video, talk show host Shawn Farash commented on X, “SHOTS FIRED. Nancy Pelosi is taking cover.” The original poster, Nick Sortor, replied, “As soon as Trump got into office, Pelosi’s portfolio started falling apart. Coincidence?” This comment kickstarted a heated discussion of where Pelosi acquired her wealth.
In one of the most-liked comments on the post, user Old School Eddie wrote, “If I had to make an educated guess [about where Pelosi got her wealth] I would say it’s a combination of money laundering, insider trading, and kickbacks.” In response, Nick Sortor astutely said, “Insider trading is by far the largest, and easiest to get away with.” Another commenter, Wayne Dunlap, said, “YES!” and shared a screenshot of the salaries of multiple prominent lawmakers compared to their net worth.
Not all of the comments on Sortor’s post were positive. Multiple users attempted to change the subject, criticizing “Trumpconomics (sic)” and insulting Sortor. However, even in the face of leftist fervor, Nick Sortor kept things civil in the comments. The conservative commentator took the time to respond to several users, saying to one, “Investigate too deeply and half of Congress will be in jail.”
Several more X users contributed to the conversation with humorous memes that hit the nail on the head. One user shared a picture of President Trump with a simple but salient caption, “I think I would rather trust a billionaire that becomes a politician than politicians that become billionaires.”
Another commented, “We owe a huge debt of gratitude to Elon Musk for quickly uncovering so much fraud in our government!” This user shared a picture captioned, “No more committees or investigations; we want trials,” echoing the overall sentiment of conservatives towards the hypocrisy and corruption of the left.
