Celebrating a Century of Life

In the year 1972, Don McLean’s “American Pie” was topping the charts, Richard Nixon was the president, and NASA launched its Space Shuttle program. It was also the year when Bob Barker, the iconic host of “The Price is Right,” began giving away brand new cars on the show. Today, at the incredible age of 99, Barker is celebrating a century of life.

A Remarkable Journey

Bob Barker, a member of the Sioux Tribe, grew up on an Indian reservation in South Dakota. It was there that he met the love of his life, Dorothy Jo Gideon, at a concert. After getting married in 1945, Barker served in the Navy Reserve during World War II but never saw active duty. He later graduated from university with a degree in economics.

Barker’s path to fame began when he caught the attention of a game show producer who was seeking a new host for “Truth or Consequences.” From 1956 to 1975, he hosted the show and eventually went on to host the Miss Universe and Miss USA pageants. However, it was in 1972 that Barker stepped onto the stage of “The Price is Right” and became a household name. The show went on to become the longest-running game show in history, with Barker serving as executive producer and winning numerous awards for his hosting skills.

Love, Loss, and Longevity

Barker credits his late wife, Dorothy Jo Gideon, for his successful career. In 1981, Gideon passed away from lung cancer, and Barker never remarried. However, he found another partner, Nancy Burnet, who has been by his side for the past 40 years. Burnet attributes Barker’s good health to his limited use of medication. Despite turning 99, Barker only takes one prescription medication for his thyroid.

Overcoming Health Challenges

Throughout the years, Barker has faced various health challenges. He underwent surgery in 1999 to correct a partially blocked artery and reduce the risk of stroke. In 2002, he had a stroke and underwent prostate surgery. Additionally, Barker has dealt with several cases of mild skin cancer, falls requiring hospital visits, and major back problems. To regain his strength, Burnet introduced supplements to Barker’s vegetarian diet, which have significantly contributed to his overall well-being.
