Russian President Vladimir Putin has publicly pledged ongoing support for Iran amid its ongoing war with the United States and Israel. During a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi in St. Petersburg, Putin positioned Moscow firmly alongside Tehran as the conflict continues to destabilize the Middle East.
Putin praised the Iranian people for their determined defense of national sovereignty and independence. He expressed hope that Iran would successfully navigate the current difficult period and that peace would eventually return to the region.
The Russian leader stated that Moscow would do everything possible to advance Iran’s interests and those of other regional peoples in pursuit of a swift peace. While the remarks marked one of Russia’s clearest public endorsements of Tehran since the war began, Putin stopped short of committing to direct military involvement.
Putin also asked Araqchi to convey a message of continued strategic partnership to Iran’s new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei. The two countries have already signed a 20-year agreement aimed at deepening economic, political, and security cooperation.
Araqchi thanked Putin and described Russia as a reliable ally that stands with Iran during crises. Russia has condemned U.S. and Israeli strikes, offered mediation, and proposed storing Iran’s enriched uranium as part of a potential diplomatic solution, though Washington has rejected that idea.
The meeting occurred as the Trump administration reviewed another Iranian proposal to end the fighting. Meanwhile, disruption in the Strait of Hormuz has reduced oil traffic, raised energy prices, and added strain to the global economy, while Russia continues to emphasize diplomacy over further large-scale military action.
