Two small single-engine planes, a Lancair 360 MK II and a Cessna 172S, collided midair at Marana Regional Airport in Arizona on Wednesday morning, just before 8:30 a.m. The airport, which lacks an air traffic control tower, is also used for flight training. According to the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), the planes crashed while “upwind of runway 12.”
The Cessna failed to land, and the Lancair crashed near runway 3, resulting in a post-impact fire. Both planes had two passengers on board, with two fatalities reported. Marana Regional Airport Superintendent Galen Beem expressed condolences, noting the unprecedented nature of the accident and praising the swift response of local authorities. This crash adds to a series of recent aviation incidents, including the fatal mid-air collision over Reagan International Airport and the tragic crash of a medical jet.
