Elon Musk and his team at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) are reportedly set to audit Fort Knox and determine whether all the gold supposedly stored inside the facility remains. The move comes as Musk and DOGE seek to rein in the federal government, cutting wasteful spending and eliminating fraud to restore the trust of the American people.
The idea was inspired by Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) who recently revealed that he has been unsuccessful in infiltrating Fort Knox. “As a U.S. senator I’ve tried repeatedly to get into Fort Knox,” he wrote on X earlier this week. According to Lee, officials at Fort Knox denied his entry because it was a “military installation.”
Responding to Lee’s post, Musk demanded that the American people be shown proof that the gold they own still exists. “Who is confirming that gold wasn’t stolen from Fort Knox?” the multi-billionaire asked. “Maybe it’s there, maybe it’s not. That gold is owned by the American public! We want to know if it’s still there. Quote Mike Lee.”
President Donald Trump also spoke about his administration’s intention to audit Fort Knox, stating his officials would determine if the gold was still there. “We’re going to go to Fort Knox, the fabled Fort Knox, to make sure the gold is there,” Trump said on Air Force One earlier this week.
According to the Treasury Department’s website, the United States gold reserves stored in Fort Knox are reportedly 147, 341, 858.382 troy ounces. Over the past few decades, skepticism has grown regarding the true amount of gold in the Kentucky facility after the last reported audit occurred in 1974.
However, Trump administration Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed, “All the gold is present and accounted for.” Nonetheless, others have maintained it would be beneficial for the administration to performa an official audit. “I think if this administration presses for an audit, that’ll be a good thing for everybody,” said Alamos Gold CEO John McCluskey during an appearance on CNBC.
The American Tribune recently reported on comments from Elon Musk, explaining how Democrats are panicking over his agenda to cut back on the “unelected bureaucracy” in the federal government. The DOGE leader said he receives “eye-daggers” from liberals every time he encounters them.
