Luna Rips Senate Leader Thune Over Voter ID Bill Stalemate

Representative Anna Paulina Luna publicly criticized Senate Majority Leader John Thune over the lack of progress on voter identification legislation, arguing that Republican leadership should be able to advance such measures given their control of Congress. Speaking in an interview with journalist Catherine Herridge, Luna described voter ID as a top national priority and suggested that failure to act could carry political consequences.

The discussion centered on the proposed SAVE America Act, which would require proof of citizenship and identification to vote in federal elections. Luna placed responsibility for the bill’s stalled progress on Senate leadership, stating that Thune has the authority to modify procedures—such as the filibuster—to allow the legislation to move forward. She argued that internal decisions within the Senate, rather than opposition from Democrats, are the primary obstacle.

Luna also criticized the modern use of the filibuster, calling it a departure from its original intent and suggesting it is hindering action on key issues. While she stopped short of labeling Thune’s leadership as weak, she said she believes his approach is preventing progress. She further claimed that if Democrats regain power, they may be more willing to eliminate the filibuster entirely.

In the meantime, Luna said she is exploring alternative strategies to advance voter ID provisions, including attaching them to other legislation such as reforms to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA). She acknowledged facing resistance from members of her own party but emphasized that she plans to continue pushing the issue, urging voters to hold elected officials accountable for their positions.
