New York Attorney General Letitia James has received financial backing from billionaire financier George Soros and members of his family for her political campaigns, including funding connected to her expected reelection bid in 2026. According to filings with the New York State Board of Elections, George Soros and his family have contributed more than $71,000 to James since 2019. Of that total, $31,000 has been designated for her anticipated 2026 reelection campaign. The remaining contributions were directed toward her earlier campaigns after she assumed the role of attorney general.
The records indicate that George Soros donated $18,000 in July 2024, while his daughter-in-law, Jennifer Soros, contributed $13,000 in May 2024. In addition, approximately $40,000 was provided to support James’s prior campaigns beginning in 2019, reflecting ongoing financial involvement from the Soros family.
Beyond direct contributions to James’s campaign, Soros-affiliated organizations have also supported political groups aligned with her. The Open Society Foundations, founded by George Soros, have provided $23.7 million to the Working Families Party since 2016 through its fundraising arm, the Working Families Organization Inc. Separately, Soros and his family have donated a combined $865,000 to the New York branch of the Working Families Party since 2018.
Letitia James has longstanding ties to the Working Families Party, having been elected in 2003 as the party’s first successful candidate in New York when she won a seat on the New York City Council representing neighborhoods including Fort Greene in Brooklyn. The next New York attorney general election is scheduled for November 3, 2026, and James, a Democrat who has held the office since 2019, is widely expected to seek another term. On the Republican side, candidates such as commercial litigator Michael Henry have announced challenges, with Henry criticizing Soros’s financial influence and arguing that it reflects broader ideological disagreements over public safety and governance in New York.[/read]
