Ex-Top News Anchor Sentenced In Jaw-Dropping Scheme

Former Phoenix television anchor Stephanie Hockridge has been sentenced to federal prison after a jury concluded she played a major role in looting a COVID-era relief program intended to save struggling small businesses. The Justice Department announced that she will serve 10 years for her participation in a sweeping fraud operation that drained tens of millions from the Paycheck Protection Program.

According to early reports, Newsweek reached out to her attorney for comment but did not immediately receive a response. Hockridge’s conviction marks one of the most high-profile cases tied to pandemic-era financial crimes.

Her sentencing comes at a time when U.S. authorities — along with law-enforcement agencies overseas — are still trying to recover enormous sums of money lost to COVID relief fraud. As the government rushed to offset the economic collapse of 2020, criminals exploited the chaos. By late 2021, nearly $100 billion in pandemic aid had been stolen, largely through unemployment and benefits scams.

Prosecutors said Hockridge, now 42, launched the fraud with her husband, Nathan Reis, by creating a company called Blueacorn in April 2020. While the company claimed to help small businesses navigate the PPP loan process, investigators found that its real purpose was to manipulate the system for massive financial gain.

Between April 2020 and May 2021, the couple and their associates pushed through more than $63 million in fraudulent loan applications. The DOJ said the group fabricated payroll documents, falsified tax forms, and generated fake bank statements to secure inflated loan amounts for their clients.

Authorities also revealed that Hockridge and her co-conspirators demanded kickbacks from borrowers, charging fees based on a percentage of the funds received. These illegal payments added to the already sizable profits collected from the fraudulent activity.

A federal grand jury indicted both Hockridge and Reis in November 2024 on conspiracy and wire fraud charges. After a detailed trial, a jury found Hockridge guilty in June of one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud.

Before her legal troubles, Hockridge was widely recognized in Phoenix as an ABC15 news anchor, a role she held from 2011 until her departure in 2018. During the trial, her defense attorneys argued that the government selectively highlighted only a small portion of loans connected to Blueacorn — roughly 20 borrowers out of what they claimed were hundreds of thousands. Her team has already signaled plans to file an appeal.

Although she faced a potential 20-year sentence, Hockridge will serve her time at the minimum-security Federal Prison Camp in Bryan, Texas. The facility is notable for housing high-profile inmates, including Ghislaine Maxwell, according to People magazine.

Prosecutors say Hockridge’s case is just one of many as federal investigators continue to unravel pandemic-era fraud schemes that siphoned billions from taxpayers — money that was originally intended to keep American workers employed during nationwide lockdowns.
