During a roundtable discussion at the White House on Thursday, President Donald Trump announced that the U.S. Military and federal law enforcement agencies would be expanding their ongoing efforts to combat foreign drug cartels to land-based operations. The escalation comes after a number of airstrikes on drug-trafficking boats in international waters, particularly off the coasts of Venezuela and Colombia.
The announcement came during a White House event highlighting recent federal efforts that have resulted in the arrest of approximately 3,200 individuals linked to drug cartels over the past month. These operations, the president said, underscore the administration’s commitment to addressing the flow of illicit narcotics into the United States, particularly fentanyl, which federal data attributes to nearly 330,000 overdose deaths over the previous five years.
