National Counterterrorism Director Joe Kent just announced the arrest of a top cartel leader who’s been running drug & money operations for nearly 20 years.

Sources report that Jaime Rene Huereca Casavantes, a prominent figure in the Sinaloa Cartel, was apprehended at the Port of Entry in El Paso, Texas, on August 1, 2025
This arrest was the outcome of a coordinated operation involving several agencies, including intelligence support from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence’s National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC) and execution by the U.S. Marshals Service, the U.S. State Department’s Diplomatic Security Service, and U.S. Customs and Border Patrol.
According to the NCTC Director, Casavantes has been linked to drug and money laundering activities for transnational criminal organizations for nearly three decades. The Director also stated that the operation was part of a “whole-of-government approach” to disrupt the Sinaloa Cartel’s operations, particularly those involving fentanyl and other illicit drugs, made possible by a recent Executive Order classifying cartels as foreign terrorist organizations
