An active shooter incident has prompted a lockdown at a U.S. Army base in Georgia, officials there say.
In an alert posted on Facebook Wednesday, Fort Stewart Hunter Army Airfield said the lockdown was “due to an active shooter incident in the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area.”
Law enforcement is on the scene, the post said, adding that “casualties have been reported.” Gates to the base were closed and some schools in the area were briefly placed on lockdown.
In a separate post on X, the 3rd Infantry Division said the lockdown included the Wright and Evans Army Airfield.
“Stay inside, close and lock all windows and doors,” the post said. “Report accountability to your leadership. Monitor media outlets for more.”
The FBI in Atlanta said on X that its office in Savannah was aware of the incident and is “coordinating with the Army’s Criminal Investigation Division for any assistance that might be needed.”
Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp wrote on X that he was “in close contact with law enforcement on the ground,” adding that his family was “saddened by today’s tragedy.”
We are keeping the victims, their families, and all those who answer the call to serve in our hearts and prayers, and we ask that Georgians everywhere do the same,” Kemp said.
