The Vatican reports that Pope Francis remained alert and oriented throughout the day, despite experiencing a bronchospasm that led to vomiting and inhalation. Following this episode, he began non-invasive ventilation and is responding well, using a mask that covers his nose and mouth for breathing assistance.
While he spent the morning engaged in prayer and respiratory physiotherapy, and received the Eucharist, sources indicate that he is still not out of danger and doctors are continuing to assess his condition. This health scare is not the pontiff’s first since his hospitalization nearly three weeks ago, as he previously faced breathing difficulties and an isolated incident of coughing and vomiting. He is now reportedly using a different type of mask and is breathing normally.
