Jane Fonda has been a prominent and often controversial figure in political activism throughout her long career. Her involvement in social and political issues dates back to the 1960s when she publicly supported the Civil Rights Movement and the Black Panthers. However, one of the most infamous moments in her activism was in 1972 when she was photographed sitting on a North Vietnamese anti-aircraft gun, earning her the nickname “Hanoi Jane” and sparking widespread criticism.
Recently, Fonda was honored with the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Life Achievement Award, using the moment to share her perspective on contemporary political issues. Given the current climate in the United States, it is not uncommon for celebrities to voice their views on political matters.
At 87 years old, Fonda took the opportunity at the SAG Awards to share her thoughts on empathy and activism.
“Thank you, SAG-AFTRA. Your enthusiasm makes this seem less like a late twilight of my life and more like a go-girl, kick a** moment. Which is good because I’m not done,” she stated.
Although she did not directly mention former President Donald Trump, she made a reference to Sebastian Stan’s upcoming portrayal of him in the 2024 series The Apprentice.
“Though you may hate the behavior of your character, you have to understand and empathize with the traumatized person you’re playing,” she said.
Fonda also spoke about the concept of ‘wokeness,’ addressing the criticism the term has received in recent years.
“Empathy is not weak or ‘woke.’ And, by the way, ‘woke’ just means you give a damn about other people,” she stated.
She concluded her speech by warning about the challenges ahead, emphasizing the importance of unity and collective action.
“A whole lot of people are going to be hurt by what’s happening, by what’s coming our way. We are going to need a big tent to resist what’s coming at us,” Fonda added.
Her remarks highlight the importance of fostering empathy and understanding among people with differing political perspectives. Rather than rushing to judge those with opposing views, she emphasized the need for open dialogue and a collective approach to addressing future challenges.
Fonda’s comments come during a time of significant change in American politics. While there were expectations that Trump’s second term would bring controversy, the rapid pace of political shifts has taken many by surprise.
Since returning to office, Trump has implemented numerous executive orders and policies, some of which have been met with praise and others with criticism. His administration’s newly formed Department of Government Efficiency, led by Elon Musk, has drawn attention, with debates over its potential impact. Meanwhile, Trump’s diplomatic efforts with Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding the ongoing Ukraine conflict have sparked global discussions about the direction of U.S. foreign policy.
With these developments unfolding, Fonda’s speech serves as a reminder of the need for vigilance, activism, and collective effort in navigating the political landscape. Regardless of political affiliation, fostering an inclusive environment where diverse perspectives are heard will be crucial in addressing the challenges that lie ahead.
