Just when you think he’s crossed the last line, he’s always got something else under his sleeve.
Ricky Gervais’ latest Netflix comedy special Armageddon has had him trending since it dropped on Christmas Day, both with positive and negative praise.
Gervais himself notes in his new comedy special that he expects instant backlash after any joke he makes, as he teased his audience that he likes to up the ante every time.
Despite his comedy specials being all the rage in the comedy world for stirring up talks with his controversial comedy, his award ceremony speeches are also beginning to return in popularity.
That’s mostly due to the fact that he has teased a suggestion that involves him teaming up with his comic rival over in the States, Dave Chappelle.
He reckons that he and Chappelle, who has also just released a new comedy special of his own called Freewheeling and Unfiltered Stand-Up, should “host the Oscars together”.
Something, as aforementioned, Gervais has more than enough experience in such as his various years presenting at The Golden Globes – where his jokes typically divide the flood of stars in his audience.
His last time hosting the Globes, back in 2020, went down as one of – if not the – most viral presenting job of his career.
And, of course, Chappelle has plenty of experience on the stage as both a presenter and comedian as he has hosted Saturday Night Live multiple times.
Chappelle is also equally known for causing a backlash to his controversial comedy, something that Gervais teases would make for a fun hosting duo at the next Oscars.
In a recent social post to X (formerly known as Twitter), Gervais posted a screenshot of the top two trending shows on Netflix along with his suggestion.
In the image, the number one trending spot was his new comedy special Armageddon with second in trending being Chappelle’s latest comedy special.
Captioning his post with: “We should host the Oscars together.”
Which caused both worry and excitement, among other emotions, amongst his social following.
One said: “Would be the highest television audience in history. Aliens in distant galaxies tuning in.”
Another said that the two comedians hosting the Oscars would “end up cancelling television”.
Someone else added that people would “actually watch the Oscars if [they] did”.
Where another joked that the “Oscars would go out with a bang. That would be the best TV ever.”
