What the River Remembers — Rewritten Version

The Branch River has flowed through our valley for longer than anyone can remember. It was here before our family arrived, before the roads, before the houses, before anyone thought to give the surrounding land a name.

My ancestors came to the valley in 1793. When they arrived, the river was already doing what rivers have always done—following gravity, choosing its course according to elevation and volume, completely unconcerned with what people wanted it to do.

That first summer, my ancestors built the dam.

They did not build it because they believed they owned the river. They built it because they understood something simple: water, when carefully controlled, can sustain a community instead of destroying it.

They cut the stone themselves. They placed every stone themselves. The structure they created survived for two hundred and thirty-two years…
