NATO fighter jets scrambled early Thursday after a Russian missile entered Polish airspace and detonated in a field in eastern Poland. The incident occurred during a large-scale overnight Russian barrage of ballistic missiles and drones targeting Ukraine that killed at least eight civilians, including children, and injured more than 50 others. Polish and NATO forces activated air defenses as the object crossed the border.
Polish authorities detected the unidentified object moving westward through Polish airspace around 3:40 a.m. local time. An F-16 fighter jet was scrambled to identify and intercept it, but the object disappeared from radar minutes later. A helicopter later located the impact site near the village of Tarnawa-Kolonia in Lublin province, roughly 90–95 kilometers inside Polish territory from the Ukrainian border.
The explosion created a large crater approximately 10 meters wide in an uninhabited field and scattered debris, but caused no injuries or damage to buildings. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk visited the site and stated that “everything indicates” it was a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile. He emphasized there was no immediate threat because it landed in an open area and that forces were prepared to shoot it down had it continued toward populated zones.
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha identified the weapon as a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile that violated NATO airspace. NATO confirmed activation of air and ground defenses in response and stated it would continue taking all necessary measures to defend alliance territory. Officials noted there is currently no indication that Poland itself was the intentional target.
The missile formed part of a broader Russian attack involving dozens of cruise and ballistic missiles plus hundreds of drones aimed primarily at Ukrainian cities, including areas near the western border. Poland’s Operational Command reported tracking multiple threats near its airspace that night, prompting heightened readiness across the region.
The incident has heightened concerns about the risk of Russia’s war in Ukraine spilling further into NATO territory, following previous airspace violations along the alliance’s eastern flank. Polish and NATO officials are continuing investigations into the debris while maintaining elevated air defense postures.
