A deadly shooting incident in Montreal’s Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood on Monday resulted in the deaths of two people, including a veteran police officer, while another officer remains hospitalized with critical injuries. Authorities confirmed that the suspected gunman was later shot and killed following a major police response.
The incident began shortly after midday, prompting emergency alerts and shelter-in-place orders for residents across parts of the city. Police urged the public to remain indoors as officers searched for what was described as an armed and dangerous suspect in the densely populated neighborhood.
According to investigators, the suspect was reportedly carrying a rifle and was seen wearing camouflage clothing. Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots as responding officers confronted the individual near a commercial area that includes businesses, residential buildings, and community facilities.
Montreal police confirmed that one officer lost their life in the line of duty, while a second officer sustained serious injuries and was transported to a hospital for treatment. Officials have not released the identities of the officers and continue to provide support to their families and colleagues.
Authorities also confirmed that a civilian was killed during the incident. Investigators have not yet determined the circumstances surrounding the civilian’s death and have not disclosed whether the individual was specifically targeted. The identities of both victims are being withheld pending notification of family members.
