Harris Shredded After Promoting Radical SCOTUS, Electoral College ‘Reforms’

Former Vice President Kamala Harris recently sparked debate by suggesting that Democrats should explore structural reforms to the U.S. political system when they next hold power. During a call with the nonprofit organization Emerge, Harris encouraged discussion on potential changes to the Supreme Court, the Electoral College, and statehood for Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C. She described the proposals as ways to address perceived partisan imbalances in the electoral system.

Harris framed her comments in the context of redistricting battles across several Republican-led states, which could shift congressional seats in favor of the GOP. Democrats, she argued, need to consider strategies to ensure fair representation and counter what she described as partisan manipulation of electoral maps. She emphasized that recent court decisions, such as the Virginia Supreme Court striking down a ballot referendum, have affected the party’s ability to gain new seats.

Republican lawmakers responded sharply to Harris’ remarks. House Speaker Mike Johnson called the ideas “institutional arson” and argued that proposals to expand the Supreme Court or alter the Electoral College risk undermining long-standing democratic norms. Several GOP representatives described the suggestions as extreme, warning that they could provoke further political polarization ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

Some Democrats expressed caution as well. Representative Jason Crow of Colorado stated that focusing on reforms like court expansion or electoral changes could distract from immediate legislative priorities such as healthcare, inflation, and national security. The comments reflect an internal debate within the party over how to respond strategically to court rulings and redistricting challenges without fueling public backlash.

The discussion comes amid broader national debates over voting rights, racial representation, and the balance of power between federal and state authorities. While Harris advocates for proactive reforms, other Democratic figures, including Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, have called for a more assertive stance on defending voting rights and challenging state-level redistricting decisions. These conversations highlight the party’s ongoing struggle to adapt to shifting political landscapes ahead of the midterms.
