Phil Knight has made a major financial move in Oregon politics, contributing $1 million to Republican gubernatorial candidate Chris Dudley. The donation, recorded this week, is the largest single contribution to any candidate in the state’s governor’s race so far this year and immediately boosts Dudley’s campaign profile in a competitive primary field.
Dudley, a former Portland Trail Blazers player turned financial professional, is competing against several Republican contenders, including Christine Drazan, Ed Diehl, and Danielle Bethell. He previously ran for governor in 2010, narrowly losing to John Kitzhaber. The current Democratic governor, Tina Kotek, is also actively fundraising as she prepares for the next election cycle.
The new contribution significantly strengthens Dudley’s financial position, bringing his total fundraising close to that of Drazan, while still trailing Kotek’s larger war chest. Dudley has said his campaign is driven by concerns over issues such as housing, economic conditions, and education, particularly in and around Portland.
Knight has a long history of influencing Oregon politics through major donations. While he has frequently supported Republican candidates and causes, he has also backed independents and other candidates in past races, demonstrating a willingness to shift support depending on the political landscape.
