Trump Delivers Historic NATO Win: Allies Commit to 5% Defense Spending Under His Leadership

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte just handed President Trump a major foreign policy victory on national television, crediting him for forcing Europe to finally pay its fair share and strengthening the alliance against Russia.

In a CBS “Face the Nation” interview with Margaret Brennan, who tried to frame Trump’s approach as a risky quid pro quo tied to Ukraine, Rutte shut it down and praised the president instead.

When pressed if Trump’s style could harm NATO’s broader goals, Rutte responded:

“What I know is that we always come together. It was under President Trump’s leadership that we had the extremely successful summit in The Hague where we agreed to spend 5% of our GDPs on defense.”

“And therefore equalizing for the first time since Eisenhower, so this is quite some time ago, back in history, equalizing what Europeans were spending and what the Americans are spending.”

“Not only because it is fair that we all spend the same — and this was a wish from Trump 45 and now it’s Trump 47 — he got this done, but also because we need it because of the Russian threat and our other adversaries.”

Trump promised this during his first term and delivered in his second. No other president in decades could get NATO’s freeloaders to step up like this. Europeans are now on the hook for real money by 2035—3.5% core military plus 1.5% related security—because Trump refused to let America carry the load alone.

Rutte’s words prove tough, no-nonsense leadership works. The alliance is stronger, fairer, and better prepared for threats—all thanks to President Trump.
