During an episode of CNN NewsNight, host Abby Phillip initially stated that the attempted attack had directly targeted Zohran Mamdani. Later reports indicated that explosive devices were allegedly thrown at a group of protesters gathered near the mayor’s residence rather than at Mamdani himself.
Authorities said the incident occurred near Gracie Mansion, where a demonstration had taken place. Investigators identified two suspects, Emir Balat, 18, and Ibrahim Kayumi, 19, who were later arrested in connection with the incident. According to reports, the devices were thrown toward a group of protesters assembled outside the area.
Phillip later addressed the mistake publicly, clarifying that the explosives were directed toward a crowd of demonstrators rather than specifically targeting the mayor. In a message posted on social media, she acknowledged the wording used during the broadcast was inaccurate and apologized for the error.
The network also removed a separate social media post that had described the suspects and the events leading up to their arrests. CNN said the post did not properly reflect the seriousness of the situation and therefore did not meet the organization’s editorial standards.
The coverage prompted discussion among journalists and commentators about how the incident was initially reported. Some observers noted that Mamdani and his family were not at the residence at the time of the incident. CNN later confirmed that the post had been deleted because it did not adequately convey the gravity of the situation and said the correction was made in accordance with its reporting guidelines.
