A supporter of President Donald Trump briefly interrupted remarks by Chris Murphy on Tuesday evening during an alternative event held in Washington, D.C. The gathering was organized to coincide with Trump’s State of the Union address to Congress.
While the president delivered his nationally televised speech at the Capitol, Murphy and other Democrats attended an outdoor event on the National Mall known as the “People’s State of the Union.” The rally was backed by MoveOn.org and featured speakers discussing immigration and social policy issues.
Murphy was introducing a guest speaker when a man approached near the stage and shouted support for Trump. Security personnel quickly intervened and escorted the individual away. Murphy briefly acknowledged the interruption before continuing with the program.
The rally featured remarks from Fereshteh Ganjavi, founder of Elena’s Light, a Connecticut-based nonprofit that works with refugee women and children. Murphy’s office has said the organization focuses on helping refugees adapt to life in the United States.
The moment reflected the broader political divide highlighted that evening. Inside the Capitol, Trump outlined his administration’s priorities, including immigration enforcement and economic policy. Outside, Democratic lawmakers and advocacy groups offered a contrasting message, emphasizing different approaches to immigration and domestic issues.
