An outdoor ice rink at the Trump-Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts was vandalized Friday morning after an unknown individual poured a toxic substance across the ice surface. Officials described the incident as a targeted act that caused extensive damage and disrupted scheduled programming at the venue’s plaza, where a temporary rink had been installed for winter events.
According to center leadership, a dark brown material was deliberately spread over a large section of the rink. Photos released by the organization showed significant portions of the ice covered in the substance, along with a black gallon-sized container reportedly left behind. While officials confirmed the material was toxic, they have not publicly identified its exact chemical composition.
The damage forced the cancellation of a Friday evening performance by Le Patin Libre, a Montreal-based contemporary skating company that had installed the rink for a weekend series of shows. Center representatives said crews were working to repair the arena in hopes of resuming scheduled programming as soon as possible.
In a statement, Roma Daravi, vice president of public relations for the center, said surveillance footage had been turned over to authorities and described the vandalism as a “calculated, malicious attack.” The U.S. Park Police are leading the investigation. As of now, no suspects have been publicly identified and no motive has been disclosed.
The performing arts center has faced political controversy in recent months following its renaming after President Donald Trump. The venue originally opened in 1971 as the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, honoring former President John F. Kennedy. Officials emphasized that the latest incident is being treated as vandalism rather than a protest, and investigations remain ongoing.
