Officials said the fire broke out at the Vondelkerk around 12:45 a.m. local time. Flames quickly engulfed the church’s neo-Gothic spire and spread across the roof, fueled by strong winds. Burning debris and sparks were blown into nearby streets, creating dangerous conditions for residents and emergency responders.

Firefighters battled the inferno for hours, finally bringing it under control by around 11 a.m., according to the Amsterdam-Amstelland Safety Region. Due to the intensity of the fire and the risk of collapse, crews were forced to work cautiously as they contained the damage and prevented it from spreading to neighboring buildings.

Local authorities evacuated nearby homes overnight and cut power to the surrounding area as a safety precaution. Dozens of displaced residents were taken to a temporary shelter. Despite the extensive destruction, a structural engineer later confirmed that the church’s outer walls were expected to remain standing.

Investigators said there were no signs that anyone was inside the church when the fire began. The cause of the blaze remains unknown, and officials have launched an investigation to determine how it started. The incident has added to concerns following a turbulent New Year’s night across the country.
