‘Squad’ Democrat Bails On Senate Race

Rep. Ayanna Pressley announced Tuesday that she will not pursue a Senate run in Massachusetts, opting instead to seek reelection in the safely Democratic 7th Congressional District. The Boston progressive, a prominent member of the “Squad,” ended weeks of speculation that she might challenge Sen. Ed Markey in what would have been a high-profile primary battle.

Pressley said the encouragement she received from supporters across the state was “deeply humbling,” but ultimately pointed to family considerations and the political demands of her district. With her daughter preparing to leave for college and the 7th District frequently targeted by the Trump administration, she said remaining in the House is “where I belong in this moment.”

In an interview with The Boston Globe, Pressley hinted that a Senate run is not off the table forever, even as she ruled it out for 2026. Her announcement narrows the field against Markey, leaving Rep. Seth Moulton as the incumbent senator’s most outspoken challenger.

Pressley emphasized her desire to continue her legislative work and to be present with her family during her daughter’s final year at home. “These are moments I’m not going to get back,” she said, noting that balancing political life and motherhood is an important factor in her decision.

Meanwhile, Moulton wasted no time sharpening his campaign message, arguing that the 79-year-old Markey is too old for another six-year term. The generational argument has gained traction among younger Democrats frustrated with the party’s aging leadership. Markey, however, has survived tough primaries before—including his 2020 victory over Joe Kennedy III—and appears prepared to defend his seat again.[/read]
