Former Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe issued a blistering statement in response to reports that the suspected D.C. shooter had once worked alongside U.S. partner forces during the Afghanistan conflict. He explained that, in the aftermath of the disastrous exit from Kabul, the Biden White House rushed tens of thousands of individuals into the United States with minimal vetting. The administration repeatedly insisted that every evacuee had been carefully screened — but reality has exposed something very different.
Ratcliffe noted that the suspect was reportedly brought into the United States in late 2021 under Biden’s “Operation Allies Welcome,” the same program widely criticized for pushing quantity over security. According to Ratcliffe, the justification at the time was the individual’s prior involvement with U.S.-aligned forces, including limited cooperation with American intelligence during operations in Kandahar.
The former DNI remarked that this was exactly the danger many experts warned about: when a withdrawal is rushed, records are incomplete, and the White House is more focused on optics than national safety, dangerous people slip through the cracks.
Ratcliffe emphasized that even individuals who had some past cooperation with the United States should not have been granted entry without airtight verification — something he says Biden’s DHS completely failed to provide.
He called the entire process a “catastrophic failure,” pointing to mounting concerns about whether the administration allowed unvetted or poorly vetted individuals into American communities solely to defend the political narrative that the evacuation was a “success.”
According to Ratcliffe, the tragedy in D.C. underscores how reckless the government became in its desperation to defend the Afghanistan withdrawal. “Our citizens and service members deserve safety — not the fallout from incompetence,” he said.
He also stressed that the Trump administration had taken a far stricter approach, ensuring that any individual granted entry had undergone multiple layers of verification and had a clearly documented history of cooperation.
