A police officer was critically injured Friday night after two law enforcement vehicles collided while escorting Vice President J.D. Vance’s motorcade through Maryville, Tennessee. Local officials said the crash occurred roughly 17 miles south of Knoxville and involved a Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper and a Maryville Police Department motorcycle officer. Both officers were part of the security detail assigned to protect the vice president during his visit to the region.
Vice President Vance was in East Tennessee for a scheduled fundraiser at Blackberry Farm, a well-known resort located in the nearby community of Walland. As the motorcade moved through the area, the two law enforcement vehicles made impact, prompting an immediate emergency response from personnel traveling with the vice president.
Jason Pack, communications director for the Tennessee Department of Safety, reported that one of the ambulances attached to the motorcade stopped instantly at the scene to render aid. Emergency responders worked rapidly to stabilize the injured officer, who was then transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center. According to city officials, the officer remains in critical condition.
Maryville Police Chief Tony Crisp released a statement urging the public to offer support and prayers for the injured officer and their family. He noted that the department is anxiously awaiting medical updates and emphasized the courage and sacrifice displayed daily by law enforcement officers in the line of duty.
Initial reports from state authorities stated that the Highway Patrol trooper involved in the crash had not been taken to a hospital. However, the City of Maryville later provided a correction, explaining that both the trooper and the motorcycle officer were transported for evaluation and treatment. As of publication time, officials had not released the trooper’s condition nor the identities of either officer involved.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol has since opened a formal investigation into the cause of the collision. The review will examine the circumstances surrounding the crash, vehicle coordination within the motorcade, and any potential contributing factors. Such investigations are standard procedure when injuries occur during official protective operations.
Katherine Pierce, the Secret Service’s resident agent in charge in Knoxville, confirmed that the agency is closely monitoring the situation. She also noted that the vice president’s motorcade continued without interruption and that Vance’s safety was never compromised. “The safety and movement of our protectees were not impacted by this incident,” Pierce said.
Separately, Vice President Vance made headlines a day earlier for sharply criticizing Democrats in a televised interview following the end of the longest government shutdown in U.S. history. Appearing on Fox News’ “Hannity,” Vance accused Democratic lawmakers of causing widespread hardship for political gain, arguing that their opposition prolonged the shutdown unnecessarily.
Vance said the 43-day shutdown created significant stress for military families, unpaid air traffic controllers, and Americans dependent on food assistance programs. He argued that Democrats’ primary objective was not negotiating budget policy, but sabotaging the administration politically. According to Vance, the final agreement that reopened the government was identical to one Democrats had rejected weeks earlier.

The vice president added that moderate Democrats privately expressed frustration with their party’s strategy but felt unable to challenge its far-left faction. The shutdown ultimately ended with a 222–209 House vote, with six Democrats joining Republicans in support of the measure. President Trump hailed the deal as a repudiation of partisan brinkmanship, accusing Democrats of trying to “hold the country hostage.”
