This revelation has sparked alarm among those who believe the system lacks adequate safeguards to verify voter eligibility.

The sheriff explained that California’s online voter registration system largely operates on an honor system. In his words, “You’re able to register and cast a vote even if you don’t live in the country.” This suggests that the system may rely too heavily on self-reported information without sufficient verification measures in place.

He went on to describe how easily someone can register to vote online. All that’s required, he said, is to enter personal information, check a box affirming honesty, and submit the application. Afterward, registrants typically receive an email or a letter from the Secretary of State confirming their registration—without any rigorous confirmation of their eligibility.

Once an individual is added to the voter rolls, they begin receiving ballots automatically for each election cycle. “Anytime an election comes around, guess what—you get mailed a ballot,” the sheriff noted. He called this practice “a little bit problematic,” pointing out how it could allow ineligible voters to repeatedly participate in California elections.

Additionally, the sheriff claimed that people often vote across county lines, raising further questions about the oversight of California’s voting process. This cross-county participation, if true, could compound existing issues of accuracy and fairness in statewide elections.

Critics also warn that Governor Newsom’s upcoming Proposition 50 redistricting effort will be “rigged,” arguing that it will entrench political control and further erode public trust in California’s democratic process. Together, these allegations paint a troubling picture of an election system critics say is vulnerable to abuse.
