A massive explosion at Smitty’s Supply oil facility near Roseland, Louisiana, Friday afternoon sent thick black smoke billowing for miles and rained oil on residents’ homes, WDSU reported.

The incident forced the authorities to maintain a mandatory evacuation order for those living within a one-mile radius. The blast rocked the rural community when the industrial facility erupted in flames, leaving nearby residents scrambling to assess damage to their properties, according to WDSU. Marty Broussard heard the explosion from his home.

“All of a sudden I heard this big boom and at first I thought it was thunder,” he told the outlet. “Then I went boom, boom, boom, and that was when it let loose right there.”

The explosion combined with rain created an unusual phenomenon, as oil seemed to fall from the sky and coat cars, roofs, and yards throughout the area. The Broussard familydiscovered their outdoor pool had turned black from the oily rainfall.

“I come out here and I see my pool, which I love; this is my paradise,” said Scarlet Broussard, surveying the damage to their Amite home’s outdoor space.

The family now faces extensive cleanup costs and concerns about their garden’s safety, WDSU reported.

“It’s going to cost a lot to get this cleaned up, and I don’t even know, I mean, I’ve got a garden, I don’t even know if I can clean that up with all the chemicals they use you know,” Scarlet Broussard said to WDSU. (REPORT: Several Injured After Deadly US Steel Plant Explosion)

Multiple agencies reportedly responded to battle the blaze that sent video-captured flames and smoke skyward.

“The best news we have is that there have been no injuries, which is a Godsend,” said Robby Miller, a parish leader, to the outlet.

The cause of the explosion remains under investigation, according to Parish leaders.
