ANCHORAGE, Alaska – July 16, 2025 – A #powerful magnitude 7.3 #earthquake occurred in the Gulf of #Alaska near the coast of #Alaska, #USA🇺🇸 in the morning of Wednesday, at 9.37 am local time (GMT -11).The quake had a shallow depth of 20 km (13 mi) and was reported felt by some people near the epicenter.The United States Geological Survey (#USGS) was the first to report the significant seismic event, which occurred at approximately 9:37 AM local time (GMT -11).

#Tsunami #Threat and #Rapid #Downgrade:
Following the initial tremor, the National Tsunami Warning Center (#NTWC) in Palmer, Alaska, swiftly issued a tsunami warning for coastal areas of Southern Alaska and the Alaska Peninsula.

This immediately triggered emergency alerts and prompted some coastal communities, including Kodiak, to activate sirens and advise residents to seek higher ground. However, within approximately an hour, the warning was downgraded to a tsunami advisory, and then fully canceled shortly after 1:00 AM local time, as the threat subsided.

Moderate shaking probably occurred in Sand Point (pop. 1,100) located 54 miles from the epicenter, King Cove (pop. 1000) 86 miles away, Cold Bay (pop. 120) 104 miles away, Perryville (pop. 110) 105 miles away, and Nelson Lagoon (pop. 52) 106 miles away.
