“I am illegal in this country. My parents are illegal here in this country. Because his mother had died, my father, as the one processing the paperwork, put my grandmother down as his mother. And so, I am illegal in this country.”
Kaohly Vang Her, a Minnesota State Representative, recently stated on the House floor that her family “broke the law to come here” in the context of debating healthcare for immigrants.
These comments led to some misinformation on social media, with claims that she is an undocumented immigrant serving in the Minnesota legislature, FOX 9 Minneapolis-St. Paul confirmed that she is a documented immigrant who became a naturalized U.S. citizen in junior high school.
Her family were Hmong refugees from Laos in the 1970s, and her father found a way to expedite their arrival to the United States. While this action involved circumventing some legal procedures at the time, Her has since obtained legal documentation and is a U.S. citizen. Minnesota law requires state legislators to be U.S. citizens and qualified voters for at least three months before the election. Her has served multiple terms since 2018, indicating she meets these requirements.
In a clarifying statement, Her emphasized, “My parents are citizens, and so am I”. Her emotional plea during the debate aimed to highlight the personal experiences of immigrants and advocate for their access to healthcare.
