On January 29, 2025, U.S. Attorney Danielle R. Sassoon announced that Senator Robert Menendez was sentenced to 11 years in prison for bribery, acting as a foreign agent, and obstruction of justice. The charges stemmed from a sweeping corruption investigation.
According to the DOJ, Menendez accepted bribes from 2018 to 2022, including gold, cash, a luxury car, and mortgage payments, often facilitated through his now-wife Nadine. The bribes were linked to Egyptian officials and businessmen connected to Nadine.
A 2022 FBI raid on their New Jersey home uncovered over $480,000 in cash, gold bars, and the bribe-funded Mercedes-Benz. Menendez was also found guilty of attempting to cover up the payments by providing false explanations to federal investigators.
Along with prison time, Menendez must forfeit over $922,000. Prosecutors say his actions represent a serious betrayal of public trust and sent a strong message about corruption at the highest levels of government.
