Former U.S. Women’s National Team superstar Megan Rapinoe sounded an unpatriotic note during a recent interview when she claimed that representing her country on the pitch was the “worst job in the world.”
The pink-haired liberal athlete made her comment in a new Netflix documentary, “Under Pressure: The U.S. Women’s World Cup Team,” covering the team’s pursuit of a third consecutive World Cup title earlier this year. Sweden ultimately defeated the reigning champions in a penalty kick shoot-out during the round of 16.
According to Rapinoe, who retired following the competition, the pressure she was put under by former President Donald Trump and other conservatives made her wish she wasn’t representing her country at all.
“I always say it’s the worst job in the world, because if you do your job, then you were supposed to, and if you do one hair less, then you are gonna get lambasted for it.”
She also shared her thoughts on playing in her final World Cup.
“I think it’s just such a different feeling knowing that this is going to be my last World Cup, being kind of an old head and having a different role on the team. It means a lot to me in a lot of different ways than the other ones did. Yeah, this one’s very special.”
Despite her regrets, Rapinoe certainly won’t be returning the millions of dollars she made while playing for the USWNT or repping major brands like Nike, Visa, Victoria’s Secret, Procter & Gamble, BodyArmor, Hulu and LUNA Bar.
During a previous interview spotlighted by The Conservative Brief, she added, “When I’m talking about LGBTQ rights, when I’m taking a knee in support of Colin Kaepernick, when I’m talking about police brutality or pay equity, it’s all the same exact thing to me.” Continuing, she added, “It’s just trying to make the world a better place and shedding light on issues. It’s about having everybody’s voice heard and setting up society to benefit everyone.
“Part of it is just who I am, I am gay so there’s that aspect, and I am a female athlete. So there is a lot of activism potential in there. I feel like female athletes are always on the forefront of anything activism because the intersectionality of us all just runs so deep—we’re women of color, gay, we’re women.”
Rapinoe hasn’t shied away from stirring the pot, however. Commenting on one of the final injuries her career, she athlete incensed Christians everywhere by citing it as proof that God doesn’t exist.
“I’m not a religious person or anything and if there was a God, this is proof that there isn’t. This is f***** up. For sure, I tore my Achilles.”
President Trump has occasionally used Rapinoe as a liberal foil on the campaign trail, cheering her loss at the World Cup and mocking her past decision to not appear at the White House following previous wins under his presidency.
In a parting break from reality, Rapinoe said she dreams of a day where transgender men can be allowed to play for the women’s national team.
